A Frightful Moment

One dark, chilly winter evening, I was out walking the dog. The glow from the street poles helped light the way.

The dog sniffed the ground as we walked. I looked toward the next street and saw what I thought was a dog running toward us.

Suddenly, it stopped.

I stopped too, leash in hand.

As it came closer, I could clearly see it was not a dog. It was a wolf.

I held the leash tightly and stood frozen. As the wolf approached, I could not believe it came to a halt only feet away from us. It looked at us for what felt like an eternity, although it was only seconds.

I was relieved when it turned and ran the other way.

I was shaking from seeing a wolf so close, but the dog was fearless and ready to chase it. I held on to the leash as tightly as I could and started walking to the closest neighbour I knew down the street. My heart felt like it was beating a mile a minute.

When I reached the neighbourโ€™s house, I told them about my close encounter with the wolf and called for a ride home.

A couple of evenings passed before I walked the dog at night again. When I did, I was more vigilant than before.
